Museomix: 3 days to remix museums together<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Museomix\u2019s mission is exploring new ways that people can make museums their own: to open novel pathways, to see museums and their collections in a new light, and to engender original intersections between disciplines, competences and cultures.<\/p>\n
Museomix brings together museum professionals, technology innovators, and digital experts with art lovers, history buffs, designers, science enthusiasts and educators. This blend of passions and professions points towards a new model, one less cloistered and restrictive, which sees future museums as:

When?<\/h3>\n
Museomix will be held from November 7th to 10 in 2014. It is a 3 day event, followed by at least one day for public presentation of the results.<\/p>\n
Where?<\/h3>\n
Museomix takes place at volunteer museums and heritage sites that have opened their spaces, and have made their collections, resources and teams available to be remixed.<\/p>\n
Who\u2019s this for?<\/h3>\n
The goal of this call for projects is to find the locations Museomix 2014. It is addressed to local Museomix communities – existing, emerging, or yet to be founded. These communities are typically founded by participants in previous Museomixes, friends of the event, and future Museomixers. They are active year-round, but are especially involved in organising the event with local museums.<\/p>\n

Organising or welcoming Museomix this year…<\/h3>\n
For Museomix to take place at a museum, several elements must come together:<\/p>\n
\n
- an open and active community<\/li>\n
- a organisation team that is clearly identified and highly engaged<\/li>\n
- a museum that is willing and involved<\/li>\n
- an appropriate budget estimate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
An open and active Museomix community<\/h3>\n
The community should be composed of a variety of profiles from different fields: cultural and artistic (those working in culture and heritage, librarians, performers, actors, and all varieties of artists, creators and makers), business (entrepreneurs, startup founders, technicians, craftsmen, etc.), education (art and design instructors, engineering professors, research professionals in the arts and sciences, etc.), and other domains further afield.<\/p>\n
While the community is gathered in organising Museomix, ideally it should continue on after the event. At the heart of this community, the organisation team nominates, selects and accompanies the candidate museums.<\/p>\n
An organisation team<\/h3>\n
Museomix is a collective adventure, and it is important that the organisation teams crosses multiple fields and competencies. This multidisciplinary will put the event in place at a local museom.
\nThe organisation team must contain:<\/p>\n\n
- a local coordinator: while they may work in the selected museum, it is preferable that they do not, as we have found that \u201cindependent\u201d coordinators tend to be more community-oriented than museum-oriented,<\/li>\n
- a former Museomix participant who is ready to animate and accompany the local community and museum in organising the event,<\/li>\n
- a museum representative who will serve as the link between the organisation team and the various museum staff members who will be involved,<\/li>\n
- a technical correspondent who will assure equipment and technology installation and performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
A museum that is willing and involved<\/h3>\n
The choice of museum is very important. It is done by jointly by the local community, the local organisation team and the global event organisers.<\/p>\n
The museum must:<\/p>\n
\n
- understand and subscribe to the principles of Museomix<\/li>\n
- work with the local community throughout the project\u2019s deveopment<\/li>\n
- open its doors, its collections and its teams to the mix<\/li>\n
- involve its teams in setting-up Museomix; the involvement of a significant number of museum staff members is one of the most important factors in successfully preparing and realizing the event<\/li>\n
- guarantee the technical feasibility and continuity of service (electricity, WiFi, etc)<\/li>\n
- engage itself to present the prototypes produced during the event to the general public for at least a full day, in addition to the opening on the evening of the event\u2019s final day<\/li>\n
- provide an appropriately large working area for Museomix teams (the local organisation team will determine the size of the event, keeping in mind that each team must have 7 members, with a minimum of 3 teams and a maximum of 12 per event)<\/li>\n
- guarantee that the museum and the spaces being museomixed will remain open and accessible during the event, in particular Saturday night and Sunday<\/li>\n
- authorise photo, sound and video recording of the majority of its collections during the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In the spirit of openness, museums that have never welcomed a Museomix will be given priority during the selection, other factors being equal.<\/p>\n
An appropriate budget estimate<\/h3>\n
In 2013, an average of 50,000 euros (68,000 US dollars or 41,000 British pounds) was collected and spent by each local event, not counting financial and material support and other partnerships, which vary greatly from one location to another. It is important that each community adapts its budget to its ambitions, its organisation, and to the format and size it aspires to.<\/p>\n
