With Museomix we offer the experience of open museums where everyone can find their own place, a museum which changes with the people who enter, a community who co-works and shares ideas and resources.

We wish to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration:

·      Experience making and showing how many things are possible,

·      Encourage the birth of new ideas,

·      Share in creative commons

·      Build a community which cares about innovation and about itself.

1/ Preserve and increase our commons

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –  – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What does Museomix do ?

·      It takes part in museum’s transformation

·      It builds a cultural forward-looking community and stimulates its skills’ development.

·      It creates an original experience for visitors (prototypes, new behaviours) and provides innovative ways to use technology.

·      It builds methods, assessments, feedback, technological bricks and contents

All these are commons which feed local communities and are expanded by them. They are called Museomix commons.

Each member of the Museomix community benefits from this and is expected to take part in it.

We want to stress that those commons are at the heart of our organisation: we are all expected to expand, preserve and share them as much as possible.

2/ Assessment: a well-known but fragile commons

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –  – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Two years ago we helped local communities experience Museomix so we shared everything and included everyone. A lot of new, very enthusiastic people joined the community.

We are aware that we sometimes miss the correspondence ?and the support for various initiatives. The actions, ideas, initiatives of each and every person are not always completely integrated into the commons and therefore the value of our common production is diminished. And the risk is to run out of  energy and enthusiasm.

Last year, we put into place a new structure with one person in charge of coordination, 2 meetings with local community leaders, dashboards and cross-disciplinary working groups. But we realised it was not enough and that our commons are fragile.

3/ Target: to build a flexible organisation in order to help the community “help itself” and strengthen its commons.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –  – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

To monitor things in order to help everybody who wants to profit from Museomix commons so that everyone can find its own place in the community.

To enlarge / develop / increase the number of the commons and to protect them.

As feedback we expect all results to become part of the commons in order to be used by every member of the community in every following project.

To stimulate initiatives :

Every idea should be  more or less connected with Museomix : it increases Museomix template or it is inspired by Museomix (same process for other projects, for different institutions than

museums, prototypes’ industrialisation)  ; all these ideas are welcome but we must see clearly  which is Museomix and which is not.

Museomix is a protected appellation and its name can’t be used for something which is not part of Museomix.

To reach those targets, the community has to :

1. Integrate community management actions.

It means networking, (and not only using online social networks), to help (new) local communities.

2. Integrate commons management.

This means to protect the commons and to prevent people from using them and not giving anything in return.

3. Integrate development.

This means identifying new needs, taking part in the community development and the permanent evolution of Museomix, linking with surrounding initiatives in order to integrate them into the Musomix concept (or not).

4. Integrate common resources management.

This means the management of the different aspects which support the commons (ie: administrative tools, program coordination, updating the contacts and the website, organising meetings)

All these different actions will be supported by people or groups of people. They may be volunteers or paid by external structures or by the Museomix association. We need to build and solidify this economic template.

4/ To decide in order to promote action

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –  – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We want to make it very clear that to be a member of the Museomix community is to contribute. Continue to take action until someone proposes something else. The need for validation must not stop acting on your ideas.

Nowadays the way we work is this: if nobody says anything it means it’s ok. But not everyone voices their opinion and therefore the ones who do appear more important. We want things to be clearer and easier: we want to know who decides on which subjects.

The founders

They are responsible the Museomix brand by putting it in the hand of the local communities and the museums with the name every year. Theyare responsible for the purpose of Museomix, build upon the original values. This vision is explained in the Vision, Missions and Principles.

Decisions by the doers

Keeping with the do-ocraty principle, the people filling for the roles cited before, who are doing and helping the Museomix community, are the one that will be legitimate to take action and decide on their actions when they cannot reach consensus.

The agora, a board to help with decisions

Some decisions have a big impact on the development or protection of the commons. Some decisions are hard to take. When people need help because decisions are difficult to take, they will be able to get the help of a board constituted of people who:

  • have a significant experience of Museomix
  • contribute to the commons
  • take part in the strategic thinking
  • are active in the community

This group will delegate actions to people or groups to help with the commons.

This group is initially made up of the founders, of people already acting for the good of the global community, and of people selected by each of the local communities, who already have organized a Museomix edition.

 5/ Durable economic balance

 – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We need money to develop and maintain the commons. We received some money to organise some Museomix events. But we need to find durable financial means in order for the commons to expand on collaborative platforms as the local communities expand.

Here are some ideas :

·      Financial / human contributions from the local communities.

·      Paying services for the outsiders who want to use the commons.

·      Additional financial resources

·      …

A workshop will soon be put into place to think about those ideas and to validate them. This will be done by the decision board. Then leaders will be taken on.
